Birmingham, AL - Trains En Route to Atlanta Collide - "About 500 residents were asked to evacuate their homes Wednesday evening after a train carrying sodium cyanide caught fire."

Amsterdam - Trains Halted at Amsterdam Central Station - "suspicious package was found on an international train arriving from Frankfurt, Germany." The package belonged to "two Dutch-speaking men in tradition Islamic dress who were arrested after initially hiding in one of the train's bathrooms."

"A Union Pacific freight train carrying chlorine gas and other hazardous chemicals derailed...no injuries...Thirteen cars, seven carrying hazardous materials including liquid propane and cleaning solutions, fell off the tracks...."

Mar 27 - Thailand - Attack on Thailand Train Injures More Than a Dozen - "An armed attack on a train carrying police and troops in Southern Thailand has left more than a dozen people wounded. The attack appears to represent an escalation in the violent tactics used by separatists in the country's Muslim-dominated South...Two bombs exploded near the tracks soon after the train departed a town in the province of Narathiwat, near the Thai-Malaysian border."

The derailment forced nearly 200 people to evacuate the area. No injuries were reported.

Mar 5, 2005 - Bancroft, MI - Train Derailment - Town Evacuated - Clean-up begins in Shiawassee County after a train derailment at Grand River Road. The train was carrying hazardous materials, and 20 of the 69 cars derailed, including 5 that tipped over. A propane tank on the train exploded and the town was evacuated. No injuries reported.

USA - The threat to rail - "It is time to start worrying because passengers on the railways..."

"A substation explosion destroyed the South Boston building after a natural gas leaked into a manhole which then traveled through the pipes to the power substation. A passenger train crashed into a tractor carrying wedding guests - 52 dead; 10 injured. The accident occurred near Kanhan 490 miles northeast of Bombay.

November 3, 2004 - Washington D.C. - Two subway Metro trains collided at The Woodley Park-National Zoo Metro Station causing commuter delays along the Red Line. The accident happened seconds after a six-car train stopped at the station. A second train without passengers began drifting backwards until it rammed into the first train. At least four people suffered minor injuries and 13 teenagers were taken to Georgetown University Hospital for evaluation. The accident is under investigation.
N.E. Moscow Rizhskaya Subway Station Explosion

"A car explosion in northern Moscow near the entrance to the Rizhskaya underground railway station killed 10 people and injured 33...."

The authorities broke up a bomb plot aimed at New York City subways, and arrested two men. The men allegedly pled to make a bomb that could be exploded in the 34th Street subway station below Herald Square or on a train pulling into that station.

October 16, 2004 - Los Angeles, California - California Train Derailments Ousts 200 "Some 200 people were evacuated when a freight train carrying hazardous materials derailed in Los Angeles County...Four homes were damaged by debris...the train was carrying paint and batteries, as well as small quantities of sulfuric acid, a resin solution and butane lighters. Nearly 50 freight cars and trailers left the track, and about 500 gallons of diesel fuel spilled. No serious injuries were reported."

A Union Pacific freight train collides with a Burlington train - forty cars derailed. One train was carrying toxic chlorine gas and ammonium nitrate which filled the sky. The engineer was killed and 50 people injured from exposure to the chemical cloud.

"On Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at 3:08 p.m., eastbound CSX 1 freight train L-412-16 derailed 11 of its 60 cars while passing through the Howard Street Tunnel in Baltimore, Maryland. Four of the 11 derailed cars were tank cars: 1 contained tripropylene, a flammable liquid; 2 contained hydrochloric acid; and 1 contained di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, which is a plasticizer and an environmentally hazardous substance. The derailed tank car containing tripropylene was punctured, and the escaping tripropylene ignited."

1999 - December 30 - Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Quebec, Canada - Several cars containing gasoline and heating oil derailed while passing another freight train coming from the opposite direction. When the oncoming on a different track hit the derailed cars it caused an explosion killing the train engineer and conductor. The subsequent explosion and fire forced 350 families to evacuate the area for at least 4 days.

1999 - October 5 - Ladbroke Grove (Paddington), England - Two trains collide head-on. Fuel tanks catch fire and killed 31 people, injuring more than 400 others.

1999 - March 15 - Bourbannais, IL - Eleven people die and 121 injured in Amtrak's City of New Orleans fiery train crash when an 80 mph passenger train hits a truck loaded with a ton of steel.

1998 - November 26 - 150+ killed in Khanna high speed train collision and fire.

1998 - June 3 - Eschede, Germany - Sections of a high-speed ICE train derail because of a faulty wheel rim. The train hits a bridge caushing it to collapse. The train accident kills 101.

1995 - October 9 - Hyder, Arizona - "A 12-car Amtrak train --the westbound Sunset Limited traveling from New Orleans to Los Angeles--derailed near Hyder, Arizona. The crash killed 1 person and seriously injured 12 others. Approximately 100 additional persons received minor injuries."

"FBI Agents, Amtrak officials, and Southern Pacific Railroad personnel went to the site of the incident. Investigation determined that a person or persons had deliberately tampered with the tracks, causing the train to derail. Investigators also found four typed letters. 1989 - May 4 - Tepic, Mexico - Approx 50 killed when train brakes fail coming down mountain.

1989 - May 12 - San Bernardino, California - Southern Pacific Freight Train derails in Cajon Pass crashing into residential neighborhood. Five people were killed and seven homes destroyed. On May 25th, 13 days after the derailment, an underground gasoline pipeline next to the tracks exploded causing a large fire which killed two people and burned eleven homes.

1986 - July 8 - Miamisburg, Ohio - CSX 15-car train derailment - "Some of the cars that derailed contained phosphorus...Shortly after the derailment, city officials ordered thousands of Miamisburg residents to evacuate their homes. The next day, officials allowed these people to return, only to have the phosphorus ignite. One Miamisburg resident described the resulting vapor cloud as "real heavy stuff, hugging right on the ground, like fog. People had their lights on, it was so dark." A second evacuation occurred, with approximately twenty thousand people seeking shelter...This was the largest evacuation to occur in Ohio's history... Over three hundred people sought treatment at area hospitals due to respiratory problems. More than one billion dollars in lawsuits resulted from this derailment."

Ohio History - Miamisburg Train Derailment - "On July 8, 1986, fifteen cars of a forty-four-car CSX train derailed near Miamisburg, Ohio. Some of the cars that derailed contained phosphorus. When ignited, phosphorus releases poisonous gas. Shortly after the derailment, city officials ordered thousands of Miamisburg residents to evacuate their homes."

1982 - January 13 - Washington D.C. - Metro train derailment after hitting tunnel support. Three people killed, 25 injured.

1975 - June 8 - Warngau, Germany - Two trains collide between Lenggries and Munich due to dispatcher error killing 41 and injuring 122.

1975 - Feb 28 - England - London Underground train fails to stop at Moorgate station tunnel killing 43 people.

1972 - Oct 6 - Saltillo, Mexico - Train carrying religious pilgrims derails and catches fire killing 204 people and injuring 1,000+.

1970 - June 21, Crescent City, Illinois - "The Great Train Fire of 1970" - Fifteen cars (nine of which contained liquefied petroleum gas) on the 109-car Toledo, Peoria and Western Railroad Train derailed in the downtown section of Crescent City. Tanker cars carrying propane exploded resulting in a debris field that plowed through downtown and a fire that engulfed the central part of the city. No deaths were reported, but 36 people were injured, a number of homes and businesses were damaged, and 16 other downtown businesses were destroyed.

1949 - Holland Tunnel Chemical Fire - "...a fire aboard a chemical truck caused enormous damage to the south tube of the tunnel. Although nobody was killed, the fire resulted in 66 injuries and nearly $600,000 worth of damage to the structure. As a result, the Port Authority adopted a strict series of rules on the transportation of hazardous materials within the tunnel."

National Briefing Washington: Railroad Deaths Fall in 2007

"There were fewer accidents and deaths involving trains last year, but more railroad incidents involving hazardous materials. Last year, 486 people nationwide were killed after trespassing on railroad lines, compared with 518 deaths in 2006, according to preliminary data released by the Federal Railroad Administration. There were 339 fatalities involving trains and a vehicle, 30 fewer than in 2006. Incidents involving railroad cars that released hazardous materials jumped to 43 reports from 28 in 2006. More trains were carrying ethanol and relatively new technologies used to safely release ethanol, and that probably contributed to the increase, said Joseph Boardman, administrator of the railroad agency."
